i have to write s story about medieval times for school and part of my story is about torture. did people of the village watch the torture? if not who did?
Answer: Yes! What more can one say? Yes, they did! That was part of the torture! “Don't do what this guy did, or this'll happen to YOU”! They loved a bit of the old torture, and seemed to delight in the screams of the unfortunate victim. Kind of like the arena in ancient Rome, with gladiators, slaves and criminals and animals being put to death. They liked executions to, and there would be be a carnival going on, with stalls selling food and stuff, children having fun, old women gossiping,
pickpockets and cutpurses lurking around. In other words, it was a nice day out for all! Except the unfortunates at the centre of it all.
Answer: It would depend. Much of the torture was done in private if it was disfiguring or required special equipment (like a rack, an iron maiden, thumbscrews, etc.) However, many forms of torture, such as the stocks or the gibbet, were intended to be public. Criminals who were locked in stocks were allowed to be targets for all sorts of humiliation. It wasn't just rotten fruit and eggs that got thrown, either. People in the stocks were frequently killed by a thrown brick.
Answer: That's not how it went down …. the police system wanted to make an example out of certain criminals, so they chose the busiest market place and a time when they knew there were going to be many shoppers about, and often administered death sentences (or time in-the-stocks) then.
They paid money to have a professional axe-wielding hang-man, so they wanted lots of people to see the beheadings, so the public knew that the criminals really were being put to death (and not somehow snuck out of town in the night to live freely elsewhere).
People were there to shop, and suddenly an announcement was made asking the crowds to gather around ….
Answer: If a convicted criminal was being punished in public then people would certainly gather to watch. What the punishment was would depend on the nature of the crime. hanging was very common punishment for many crimes, as it continued to be until the mid-19th century.
Answer: often they did, if it was a public torture, there were private sessions too.
In general, people being used as examples were tortured publicly: accused thieves and accused traitors, etc.
Tortures used to force confessions or to obtain information were generally more private matters.
Answer: Torture was usually done in towns, where the courts were and where there would be a bigger audience. But yes, it was done. I read of one city that bought a condemned criminal from another city so that they could torture him in public.
