I’ve to do a speech on why it is important to watch french movies.What are some benefits we get from watching french movies.and can anyone please give me some names of good french movies.

Answer:
It is important for many reasons, though I wouldn't say it's a requirement;

- the French look at it as the 7th Art

- a lot of movies begin out as foreign films and then get Americanized . . i.e. The Departed or Nine Months

- a lot of French actors do Anglophone films ( Juliette Binoche, Gerard Depardieu) and even some Anglo-actors do French films (John Malkovich, Kristen Scott Thomas)

- it helps if you are learning French

- or before you travel to France/Switzerland/Belgium/Quebec

- Something different

- more nudity and graphic sex if you’re into that

French films I ca suggest are;

La Pianiste

La Reine Margot

La Boum

Asterix

La Doublure

Huit Femmes

Belle du Jour

Le Huitieme Jour

Jet Lag

to name a few. But I warn you, there are many!

Answer:
It is not important to watch movies. Life is more important than that. However, if you watch movies, there’s a huge body of very good French ones, dating back to the very beginning of motion pictures in the 1890s. In particular, from the 1950s and 60s, the french 'new wave' brought a new approach to film, where it was made as an art form rather than just entertainment by a group of academics and critics including Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol and Jacques Rivett.

They developed a style of film making called 'auteur' or author, where there’s one over-riding person making all the decisions on the film. This was the director who was nearly always also one of the writers, and also one of the producers. Until this time, the producer had been the most important person, particularly in Hollywood where he would obtain the script, cast the film and assign it to a studio director. The french admired and emulated the few exceptions to this rule, such as Charlie Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock.

Rather than suggest some films to watch, try watching some by the directors I’ve mentioned, as well as earlier french directors such as Jean Renoir, Jacques Tati and Jean Cocteau.
